Tiga siswa SMAN 2 Palangkaraya, Kalimantan Tengah, meraih juara dunia atas temuan obat penyembuh kanker dengan bahan baku alami berupa batang pohon tunggal atau dalam bahasa dayak disebut dengan bajakah.
Tanaman ini diperoleh di hutan Kalimantan Tengah. Ketiga siswa itu bernama Yazid, Anggina Rafitri, dan Aysa Aurealya Maharani.
Guru pembimbing siswa yang merupakan guru biologi, Helita, mengatakan, keberhasilan ketiga siswa tersebut berawal dari informasi Yazid.
Yazid mengatakan bahwa ada sebuah tumbuhan di hutan Kalimantan Tengah yang kerap digunakan keluarganya bisa menyembuhkan kanker, bahkan kanker ganas stadium empat sekalipun.
Di bawah bimbingan Helita, ketiga siswa itu memutuskan untuk memulai pembahasan awal yang lebih serius mengenai kayu bajakah tersebut. Penelitian diawali dengan uji pendahuluan di laboratorium sekolah.
Lalu penelitian dilanjutkan dengan uji sampel penelitian lanjutan, yang menggunakan dua ekor mencit atau tikus betina atau tikus kecil berwarna putih, yang sudah diinduksi atau disuntik zat pertumbuhan sel tumor atau kanker.
Sel kanker berkembang di tubuh tikus dengan ciri banyaknya benjolan di tubuh, mulai dari ekor hingga bagian kepala.
Mereka lalu memberikan dua penawar atau obat yang berbeda terhadap kedua tikus. Satu tikus diberi bawang dayak dalam bentuk cairan yang diminumkan ke tikus, sementara tikus laiin diberi air rebusan yang berasal dari kayu bajakah.
“Setelah memasuki hari ke-50, mencit yang diberi air penawar dari bawang dayak mati, sementara mencit yang diberi cairan kayu bajakah tetap sehat, bahkan bisa berkembang biak,” ujar Helita, Senin (12/8/2019).
Setelah melalui pembuktian terhadap media uji sampel, pada awal Mei 2019 penelitian dilanjutkan dengan memeriksa kadar yang terdapat pada kayu bajakah tersebut melalui uji laboratorium, yang bekerja sama dengan pihak laboratorium di Universitas Lambung Mangkurat, Banjarmasin, Kalimantan Selatan.
Hasil penelitian, kayu bajakah itu memiliki kandungan yang cukup kaya antioksidan, bahkan ribuan kali lipat dari jenis tumbuhan lain yang pernah ditemukan, khususnya untuk penyembuhan kanker.
Beberapa hasil uji laboratorium ditemukan fenolik, steroid, tannin, alkonoid, saponin, terpenoid, hingga alkonoid.
Berdasarkan hasil tertulis uji laboratorium dari Universitas Lambung Mangkurat itu, ketiga siswa dibantu guru pembimbing mengolah kayu bajakah menjadi serbuk teh siap seduh untuk bisa dibawa ke ajang kompetisi yang akan diadakan di Bandung.
Pada 10 Mei 2019, guru pembimbing dan ketiga siswa sepakat untuk mengikuti perlombaan yang diadakan di Bandung.
“Kami sepakat untuk mengikuti lomba Youth National Science Fair 2019 (YNSF) yang dilaksanakan di Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (UPI) Bandung. Kami bersyukur berhasil memenangi perlombaan tersebut. Bahkan, tak disangka kami menjadi perhatian dan berhasil meraih juara, dengan memperoleh medali emas, terbaik se-Indonesia,” ujarnya.
“Ini menjadi tiket kami untuk melangkah ke tingkat internasional,” kata Yazid.
Setelah sukses di Bandung, karya ilmiah dari ketiga siswa tersebut dipilih mewakili Indonesia untuk tampil dalam perlombaan tingkat internasional dalam ajang World Invention Olympic (WICO) di Seoul, Korea Selatan.
Namun, dalam ajang selanjutnya Yazid tidak ikut sehingga diwakilkan oleh dua rekannya, Anggina Rafitri dan Aysa Aurealya Maharani.
Aysa mengatakan, dia sempat merasa tidak yakin membawa hasil karya mereka ke tingkat internasional. Namun, mereka tetap berusaha tampil sebaik mungkin.
“Sangat tidak diduga kami kembali berhasil meraih juara di tingkat internasional, dengan meraih juara dunia life sains pada ajang World Invention Olympic (WICO) di Seoul, Korea Selatan. Kami kembali memperoleh medali emas dengan menggeser 22 negara yang ikut berkompetisi saat itu,” kata Aysa.
Kemenangan tersebut membuat semangat ketiga siswa semakin meningkat. Banyak kenangan dan wawasan yang mereka temukan saat itu yang tentu saja menjadi kebanggaan tersendiri bagi para siswa karena bisa membawa harum nama Kalimatan Tengah dan Indonesia.
Anggina mengatakan merasa bahagia dapat membantu orang banyak untuk penyembuhan kanker dan membagi informasi tentang kearifan lokal Kalimantan Tengah.
“Ke depan kami akan terus berupaya menggali potensi alam lain agar Kalimantan Tengah yang kaya akan sumber daya bisa bermanfaat bagi banyak orang,” kata Anggina.
Hingga kini belum ada rencana, baik guru pembimbing maupun ketiga siswa, untuk memproduksi hasil temuan mereka untuk diperjualbelikan.
